Girls

One of my favorite movie. It is a very nice love story shot in 1961, in the USSR by director Yuri Chulyukin based on the story of the same name by B. Bedny.

There are English subtitles.

In the winter of 1961-1962, an 18 year old culinary school graduate, Tosya who is an orphan comes to Simferopol to the Bodrovsky timber industry entreprise in the Urals. She goes at a dance party at a local club and meet a local celebrity, Ilya Kovrigin. At that very first dances, she shaves off the local idol – the best foreman Ilya Kovrigin, and they begin a love-struggle, in the best traditions of Soviet lyrical comedies.

Abroad, the picture was a success. It received a prize at the Edinburgh Film Festival and a prize at the Mar del Plata Film Festival.

Foreign newspapers called Rumyantsev “Charlie Chaplin in a skirt”, and the Italians – “Russian Juliet Mazina.”
