Маленькому зайчикуTo a little hare
На сырой ложбинкеOn a damp hollow
Прежде глазки тешилиWho used to amuse his eyes
Белые цветочки…with white flowers …
Осенью расплакалисьIn the autumn , burst into tears,
Тонкие былинки,Thin blades of grass
Лапки наступаютPaws step
На жёлтые листочки.on yellow leaves.
Хмурая, дождливаяGloomy, rainy
Наступила осень,Autumn has come,
Всю капустку сняли,All the cabbage has been picked up,
Нечего украсть.There is nothing to steal.
Бедный зайчик прыгаетThe poor little hare is jumping
Возле мокрых сосен,near the wet pines,
Страшно в лапы волкуIt’s scary, into the clutches of a wolf
Серому попасть…A Gray wolf to fall into …
Думает о лете,He thinks about summer,
Прижимает уши,presses his ears,
На небо косится –looks at the sky –
Неба не видать…Can’t see the sky…
Только б потеплее,If only it were warmer,
Только бы посуше…If only it were drier…
Очень неприятноIt’s very unpleasant
По воде ступать!to step on water!

Short analysis of the poem “The little hare” by Alexander Blok

The poem revolves around the adorable and endearing character of a “little hare”. Through the perspective of the narrator, the focus is primarily on delving into the emotions and thoughts of this charming protagonist.

In the warm summer that had passed, the little hare enjoyed a contented life. Through a single detail, the author conveys the little hare’s former comfort – the sight of the bunny being “amused by white flowers.” However, as autumn arrived, the conditions of the little hare’s existence changed. The predominant feature of the landscape sketch now is dampness, which sets the tone for the present moment. This “wet” effect is achieved by utilizing vocabulary with corresponding meanings such as “damp,” “cried,” “rainy,” “wet,” “drier,” and even “to walk on water.” The author emphasizes the unpleasant tactile sensations that arise from coming into contact with a wet surface. Additionally, the theme of autumn is further associated with the motifs of cold weather and scarcity of food.

In the poem, the narrator skillfully incorporates the fears and desires of the character, adding depth to the little hare’s experiences. By drawing upon the folklore about hares being afraid of the “gray wolf,” the narrator taps into a common fear that many readers can relate to. This fear adds a layer of tension and vulnerability to the character’s journey.

Moreover, the poem establishes an ongoing antithesis between the comfort of summer and the discomfort of autumn. This contrast helps to highlight the little hare’s longing for the warmth and dryness of the past season. As autumn brings change and uncertainty, the bunny yearns for the familiar and pleasant experiences of summer. This yearning symbolizes a universal desire for better times and a sense of nostalgia for what has been lost.

By employing these narrative techniques, the poet skillfully brings forth the little hare’s fears, desires, and longing, creating a richer and more emotionally resonant reading experience.
