Short analysis of the poem “Prayer” by Mikhail Lermontov

The Verse “Prayer” (In a difficult moment of life) written by Lermontov in 1839, shortly after he returned from exile, is a vivid example of religious lyrics and is very highly valued among followers of unorthodox Christian teachings.

Lermontov began his poetic writer career as a lone rebel, his ideal was a rebellious spirit, standing above human and divine laws, which is very far from Christian humility and submission, which caused many to consider the poet freethinker and atheist.

The verse “Prayer” can be explained by a painful search for a way out of a difficult situation, after the doors to many houses of high society were closed to him and that they began to treat him with suspicion and distrust. Faith remained his only mean of salvation when other possibilities have been exhausted. Lermontov’s prayer is simple and easy, the important part is “the consonance of living words”. The combination of words has an incredible power, allowing a person to throw off heavy burden of accumulated experiences and suffering, cleaning the soul and making it possible to continue to bear one’s cross on life.

Prayer

In a difficult moment of life
If there is sadness in my heart,
One wonderful prayer
I repeat by heart.
There is a power of grace
In the consonance of living words,
And breathes incomprehensible
Holy charm in them.
Like a burden will roll off your soul,
Doubt is far away –
And I believe it, and I cry,
And it’s so easy, easy…
