Short analysis of the poem “The Flying Ridge of Clouds is Thinning” by Alexander Pushkin
Alexander Pushkin wrote the wonderful love poem “The Flying ridge of Clouds is thinning” in 1820 while in Caucasian exile on the Crimean Peninsula, but it is known that the original name of the poem was “Таврическая звезда” (Tauride Star).
When it was published Pushkin asked to remove the last three lines, but it was not done and the poet was horrified that his secret love would be reveled not only to the general public but also by that very maiden. He didn’t need to worry since even nowadays there are still several hypotheses about who he was referring to. It could have been Ekaterina Raevskaya, Maria Golitsyna, or Ekaterina Karamzina.
In the first few lines, our hero addresses the star, most likely Venus which is named after the ancient Roman Goddess of love and describes the landscapes causing the lyrical hero to remember. According to researchers of Pushkin’s lyrics, this refers to the mountainous bank of the Tyasmina River in Kamenka.
Then the hero gives sensuality and liveness to the nature around him, he beautifully describes the landscape of the mountainous southern nature, remembering how he admired it. We can sense his mood in every line of the poem it seems to understand the poet and awakens in him pleasant memories. Our hero is pacified by the night landscape and inspired by the beauty of nature, he recalls beautiful pictures from the past in a dreamy manner.
Finally, Pushkin draws a “young maiden” who searched for the star Venus in the darkness and called her friends by its name. Thus, the female image becomes the personification of love itself.

The flying ridge of clouds is thinning; |
Sad star, evening star, |
Your ray illuminated with silver light the withered plains, |
And the slumbering bay, and the black rocky peaks; |
I love your faint light in the heavenly heights: |
| It awakened the thoughts that had fallen asleep in me. |
I remember your sunrise, familiar luminary, |
Over a peaceful country, where everything is sweet to the heart, |
Where slender poplars rose in the valleys, |
Where gentle myrtle and dark cypress slumber, |
| And the midday waves rustle sweetly. |
There once in the mountains, full of heartfelt thoughts, |
Over the sea I dragged pensive laziness, |
When the shadow of the night descended on the huts — |
And a young maiden looked for you in the darkness |
| And called her friends by your name. |
