It took me ages to work out where the little prince came from. He asked me lots of questions but never seemed to hear mine. I gradually pieced his story together from odd things he said. For instance, when he first caught sight of my plane (I shall not draw my airplane; that would be much too complicated for me), he asked me:	Il me fallut longtemps pour comprendre d’où il venait. Le petit prince, qui me posait beaucoup de questions, ne semblait jamais entendre les miennes. Ce sont des mots prononcés par hasard qui, peu à peu, m’ont tout révélé. Ainsi, quand il aperçut pour la première fois mon avion (je ne dessinerai pas mon avion, c’est un dessin beaucoup trop compliqué pour moi) il me demanda :
“What’s that thing?”	– Qu’est-ce que c’est que cette chose-là ?
“It’s not a thing. It flies. It’s a plane. It’s my plane.”	– Ce n’est pas une chose. Ça vole. C’est un avion. C’est mon avion.
And I was proud to tell him that I was a pilot and I flew planes. Then he exclaimed:	Et j’étais fier de lui apprendre que je volais. Alors il s’écria :
“What! You feel out of the sky!”	– Comment ! tu es tombé du ciel ?
“Yes”, I replied modestly.	– Oui, fis-je modestement.
“Oh! That’s funny.”	– Ah ! ça c’est drôle…
And the little prince gave a tinkling laugh which I found extremely annoying. I expect people to take my troubles seriously. Then he added:	Et le petit prince eut un très joli éclat de rire qui m’irrita beaucoup. Je désire que l’on prenne mes malheurs au sérieux. Puis il ajouta :
“So you came out of the sky too! What planet are you from?”	– Alors, toi aussi tu viens du ciel ! De quelle planète es-tu ?
It suddenly dawned on me that he was giving me an important clue as to his mysterious appearance, and I said:	J’entrevis aussitôt une lueur, dans le mystère de sa présence, et j’interrogeai brusquement :
“You’re from another planet, aren’t you?”	– Tu viens donc d’une autre planète ?
But he did not reply. Still staring at my plane, he gently nodded his head:	Mais il ne me répondit pas. Il hochait la tête doucement tout en regardant mon avion :
“Of course, you can’t have come from very far away in that thing.”	– C’est vrai que, là-dessus, tu ne peux pas venir de bien loin…
And he stood lost in thought for a while. Then, taking my lamb out of his pocket, he examined his treasure.	Et il s’enfonça dans une rêverie qui dura longtemps. Puis, sortant mon mouton de sa poche, il se plongea dans la contemplation de son trésor.
You can imagine how intrigued I was by his allusion to other planets. So I tried to find out more:	Vous imaginez combien j’avais pu être intrigué par cette demi-confidence sur « les autres planètes ». Je m’efforçai donc d’en savoir plus long :
“Where do you come from, little man? Where is ‘your place’? Where do you want to take my lamb?”	– D’où viens-tu, mon petit bonhomme ? Où est-ce « chez toi » ? Où veux-tu emporter mon mouton ?
He pondered for a while and replied:	Il me répondit après un silence méditatif :
“The good thing about the crate is that at night it can be his house.”	– Ce qui est bien, avec la caisse que tu m’as donnée, c’est que, la nuit, ça lui servira de maison.
“Exactly. And if you behave, I’ll give you a rope to tie him up during the day. And a stake.”	– Bien sûr. Et si tu es gentil, je te donnerai aussi une corde pour l’attacher pendant le jour. Et un piquet.
The little prince was shocked:	La proposition parut choquer le petit prince :
“Tie him up? What a strange thing to do!”	– L’attacher ? Quelle drôle d’idée !
“But if you don’t tie him up, he’ll wander all over the place and get lost.”	– Mais si tu ne l’attaches pas, il ira n’importe où, et il se perdra…
And my little friend burst out laughing again:	Et mon ami eut un nouvel éclat de rire :
“But where would he go?”	– Mais où veux-tu qu’il aille !
“Anywhere. Straight ahead of him.”	– N’importe où. Droit devant lui…
Then the little prince remarked solemnly:	Alors le petit prince remarqua gravement :
“It wouldn’t matter, my place is so tiny!”	– Ça ne fait rien, c’est tellement petit, chez moi !
And he added wistfully:	Et, avec un peu de mélancolie, peut-être, il ajouta :
“Straight ahead of him, nobody can go very far.”	– Droit devant soi on ne peut pas aller bien loin…
