Жил старик со своею старухойAn old man lived with his old woman
У самого синего моря;By the very blue sea;
Они жили в ветхой землянкеThey lived in a tumbledown hut made of mud
Ровно тридцать лет и три года.

Старик ловил неводом рыбу,The old man was fishing with a net,
Старуха пряла свою пряжу.The old woman was spinning her yarn.
Раз он в море закинул невод, —Once he cast the net into the sea,
Пришел невод с одною тиной.The net came with one slime.
Он в другой раз закинул невод,He threw the net another time,
Пришел невод с травой морскою.The net camee with weed.
В третий раз закинул он невод, —For the third time he threw a net, –
Пришел невод с одною рыбкой,The net came with one fish,
С непростою рыбкой, — золотою.With an unusual fish – a golden fish.
Как взмолится золотая рыбка!How the goldfish began to beg!
Голосом молвит человечьим:It says in a human voice:
«Отпусти ты, старче, меня в море,“Let me go, old man, into the sea,
Дорогой за себя дам откуп:

Dear for myself, I will give a ransom:

Откуплюсь чем только пожелаешь.»I’ll give you whatevere you want.”
Удивился старик, испугался:The old man was surprised, frightened:
Он рыбачил тридцать лет и три годаHe fished for thirty years and three years
И не слыхивал, чтоб рыба говорила.And he had never heard a fish speak.
Отпустил он рыбку золотуюHe released the goldfish
И сказал ей ласковое слово:And he said to it a kind word:
«Бог с тобою, золотая рыбка!“God be with you, goldfish!
Твоего мне откупа не надо;I don’t need your ransom;
Ступай себе в синее море,Step into the blue sea
Гуляй там себе на просторе».Swim free, swim where you wish!’
Воротился старик ко старухе,The olde man returned to the old woman
Рассказал ей великое чудо.He told her of this great miracle.
«Я сегодня поймал было рыбку,“Today I caught a fish,
Золотую рыбку, не простую;no ordinary fish, but a golden fish;
По-нашему говорила рыбка,The fish spoke to me,
Домой в море синее просилась,It asked to go home in the blue sea,
Дорогою ценою откупалась:Offered a high price:
Откупалась чем только пожелаю.To buy whatever I wanted
Не посмел я взять с нее выкуп;I did not dare to take a ransom from it;
Так пустил ее в синее море».So I let it into the blue sea.
Старика старуха забранила:The old woman scolded the old man:
«Дурачина ты, простофиля!“You fool, you fool!
Не умел ты взять выкупа с рыбки!You did not knowe how to take a ransom from a fish!
Хоть бы взял ты с неё корыто,If only you took a washtub from it,
Наше-то совсем раскололось».Ours is completely broken.”
