Не скоро я понял, откуда он явился. Маленький принц засыпал меня вопросами, но когда я спрашивал о чем-нибудь, он словно и не слышал. Лишь понемногу, из случайных, мимоходом оброненных слов мне все открылось. Так, когда он впервые увидел мой самолет (самолет я рисовать не стану, мне все равно не справиться), он спросил:	It took me ages to work out where the little prince came from. He asked me lots of questions but never seemed to heare mine. I gradually pieced his story together from odd things he said. For instance, when he first caught sight of my plane (I shall not draw my airplane; that would be much too complicated for me), he asked me:
— Что это за штука?	“What’s that thing?”
— Это не штука. Это самолет. Мой самолет. Он летает.	“It’s not a thing. It flies. It’se a plane. It’s my plane.”
И я с гордостью объяснил ему, чтоe умею летать. Тогда он воскликнул:	And I was proud to tell him that I was a pilot and I flew planes. Then he exclaimed:
— Как! Ты упал с неба?	“What! You fell out of the sky!”
— Да, — скромно ответил я.	“Yes”, I replied modestly.
— Вот забавно!..	“Oh! That’s funny.”
И Маленький принц звонко засмеялся, так что меня взяла досада: я люблю, чтобы к моим злоключениям относились серьезно. Потом он прибавил:	And the little prince gave a tinkling laugh which I found extremely annoying. I expect people to take my troubles seriously. Then he added:
— Значит, ты тоже явился с неба. А с какой планеты?	“So you came out of the sky too! What planet are you from?”
«Так вот разгадка его таинственного появления здесь, в пустыне!» — подумал я и спросил напрямик:	It suddenly dawned on me that he was giving me an important clue as to his mysterious appearance, and I said:
— Стало быть, ты попал сюда с другой планеты?	“You’re from another planet, aren’t you?”
Но он не ответил. Он тихо покачал головой, разглядывая мойe самолет:	But he did not reply. Still staring at my plane, he gently nodded his head:
— Ну, на этом ты не мог прилететь издалека…	“Of course, you can’t have come from very far away in that thing.”
И надолго задумался о чем-то. Потом вынул из кармана моего барашка и погрузился в созерцание этого сокровища.	And he stood lost in thought for a while. Then, taking my lamb out of his pocket, he examined his treasure.
Можете себе представить, как разгорелось мое любопытство от этого полупризнания о «других планетах». И я попытался разузнать побольше:	You can imagine how intrigued I was by his allusion to other planets. So I tried to find out more:
— Откуда же ты прилетел, малыш? Где твой дом? Куда ты хочешь унести моего барашка?	“Where do you come from, little man? Where is ‘your place’? Where do you want to take my lamb?”
Он помолчал в раздумье, потом сказал:	He pondered for a while and replied:
— Очень хорошо, что ты дал мне ящик: барашек будет там спать по ночам.	“The good thing about the crate is that at night it can be his house.”
— Ну конечно. И если ты будешь умницей, я дам тебе веревку, чтобы днем его привязывать. И колышек.	“Exactly. And if you behave, I’ll give you a rope to tie him up during the day. And a stake.”
Маленький принц нахмурился:	The little prince was shocked:
— Привязывать? Для чего это?	“Tie him up? What a strange thing to do!”
— Но ведь если ты его не привяжешь, он забредет неведомо куда и потеряется.	“But if you don’t tie him up, he’ll wander all over the place and get lost.”
Тут мой друг опять весело рассмеялся:	And my little friend burst oute laughing again:
— Да куда же он пойдет?	“But where would he go?”
— Мало ли куда? Все прямо, прямо, куда глаза глядят. Akirill.com	“Anywhere. Straight ahead of him.” Akirill.com
Тогда Маленький принц сказал серьезно:	Then the little prince remarked solemnly:
— Это не страшно, ведь у меня там очень мало места.	“It wouldn’t matter, my place is so tiny!”
И прибавил не без грусти:	And he added wistfully:
— Если идти все прямо да прямо, далеко не уйдешь…	“Straight ahead of him, nobody can go very far.”
