Последний кончился огарок,	The last candle ended,
И по невидимой черте	And along an invisible line
Три красных точки трех цигарок	Three red dots of three cigarettes
Безмолвно бродят в темноте.	Silently roam in the darkness.

О чем наш разговор солдатский?	What is our soldier talking about?
О том, что нынче Новый год,	About the fact that today is the New Year,
А света нет, и холод адский,	And there is no light, and the cold is hellish,
И снег, как каторжный, метет.	And the snow, like at hard labor, sweeps.

Один сказал: «Моя сегодня	One said: “Today, my wife
Полы помоет, как при мне.	will wash the floors, just like when I was there.
Потом детей, чтоб быть свободней,	Then the children, in order for her to be freer,
Уложит. Сядет в тишине.	She will put to bed. Then she’ll sit in the silence

Ей сорок лет — мы с ней погодки.	She is forty years old – we’re almost the same age.
Всплакнет ли, просто ли вздохнет,	Will she cry, will she just sigh,
Но уж, наверно, рюмкой водки	But already, probably, she will put a memorial glass of vodka
Меня по-русски помянет…»	And will remember me as is the custom among Russians…”

Второй сказал: «Уж год с лихвою	The second said: “For more than a year,
С моей война нас развела.	The war has separated us.
Я, с молодой простясь женою,	I, having said goodbye to my young wife,
Взял клятву, чтоб верна была.	Took her oath to be faithful.

Я клятве верю,— коль не верить,	I believe her oath, if I did not believe in it,
Как проживешь в таком аду?	How could I live in such a hell?
Наверно, все глядит на двери,	Probably she is looking at the door,
Все ждет сегодня — вдруг приду…»	She is waiting today – suddenly I will come in … “

А третий лишь вздохнул устало:	And the third only sighed wearily:
Он думал о своей — о той,	He was thinking about his own – the one
Что с лета прошлого молчала	who had been silent since last summer
За черной фронтовой чертой…	Behind the black front line …

И двое с ним заговорили,	And two of them spoke to him,
Чтоб не грустил он, про войну,	So that he would not be sad, about the war,
Куда их жены отпустили,	Where their wives let them go,
Чтобы спасти его жену.	To protect his wife.

Жди меня, и я вернусь.	Attends-moi, et je reviendrai.
Только очень жди,	Juste attends longtemps,
Жди, когда наводят грусть Желтые дожди,	Attends, quand les pluies jaunes te rendent triste
Жди, когда снега метут,	Attends quand la neige tombe
Жди, когда жара,	Attends, quand il fait chaud,
Жди, когда других не ждут,	Attends, quand les autres n’attendent pas,
Позабыв вчера.	Oubliant hier.
Жди, когда из дальних мест	Attends, quand des endroits lointains
Писем не придет,	Aucune lettre ne te parvient
Жди, когда уж надоест Всем, кто вместе ждет.	Attends, jusqu’à ce que tous ceux qui attendent ensemble soit fatigues d’attendre.

Жди меня, и я вернусь,	Attends-moi, et je reviendrai,
Не желай добра	Ne souhaite pas de bien
Всем, кто знает наизусть,	à tous ceux qui savent,
Что забыть пора.	Qu’il est temps d’oublier.
Пусть поверят сын и мать	Laisse le fils et la mère croire
В то, что нет меня,	Que je ne suis plus,
Пусть друзья устанут ждать,	Laisse les amis se lasser d’attendre,
Сядут у огня,	S’asseoir près du feu
Выпьют горькое вино	Boire du vin amer
На помин души…	À la mémoire de mon âme…
Жди. И с ними заодно	Attends. Et avec eux, en même temps
Выпить не спеши.	Ne te précipite pas pour boire.

Жди меня, и я вернусь,	Attends-moi, et je reviendrai,
Всем смертям назло.	Malgré toutes les morts.
Кто не ждал меня, тот пусть	Celui qui ne m’a pas attendu, laisse-le
Скажет: – Повезло.	dire : – Chanceux.
Не понять, не ждавшим им,	Ils ne comprennent pas, ceux qui ne les attendaient pas,,
Как среди огня	Comment au milieu du feu
Ожиданием своим	Par ton attente
Ты спасла меня.	Tu m’as sauvé.
Как я выжил, будем знать Только мы с тобой,-	Comment j’ai survécu, seuls toi et moi le saurons
Просто ты умела ждать,	Tu savais juste attendre,
Как никто другой.	Comme personne d’autre.
