Wives by Konstantin Simonov
Translated by

The last candle ended,
And along an invisible line
Three red dots of three cigarettes
Silently roam in the darkness.
What is our soldier talking about?
About the fact that today is the New Year,
And there is no light, and the cold is hellish,
And the snow, like at hard labor, sweeps.
One said: “Today, my wife
Полы помоет, как при мне.will wash the floors, just like when I was there.
Then the children, in order for her to be freer,
She will put to bed.  Then she’ll sit in the silence
She is forty years old – we’re almost the same age.
Will she cry, will she just sigh,
But already, probably, she will put a memorial glass of vodka
And will remember me as is the custom among Russians…”
The second said: “For more than a year,
The war has separated us.
I, having said goodbye to my young wife,
Took her oath to be faithful.
I believe her oath, if I did not believe in it,
How could I live in such a hell?
Probably she is looking at the door,
She is waiting today – suddenly I will come in … “
And the third only sighed wearily:
He was thinking about his own – the one
Что с лета прошлого молчалаwho had been silent since last summer
Behind the black front line …
And two of them spoke to him,
So that he would not be sad, about the war,
Where their wives let them go,
To protect his wife.
